Each year I try to find a special type of service project to do random acts of kindness. This year, by accident, I found a website describing hearts being found all over the world. Two sisters had started this project to quilt hearts and leave them in random places. It would contain a tag that would state "I found a quilted heart". "I need a home" and the the website for people to eventually look up and post their stories... how they found their quilted hearts. What a glorious idea! It was also very similar to the painted rock movement that was big at the turn of the century. People would paint rocks and display them along paths and special places where people would find them and take them home, with kindness in their heart.
The best part of these hearts is that the people who are making them are truly in a random act of kindness. They will not be paid back in any way - as the finder of those quilted hearts have no way to know who created and placed theme in a random spot to be found.
I am one who loves to do these kinds of projects. So this year I have begun the quilting of hearts. Ironically, I have plenty of friends who want to be involved, so I have been making 20-30 per week and handing them to all those who are interested in distributing them.
Many of us watch the website, on a daily basis, to see if people are finding them and posting them on the IFAQH.com site! The stories on the site range from people being excited that they found a quilted heart to being comforted, because on that day, they were missing a loved one or, had a bad day at work. There have been all kinds of lucky hearts who have been found by young and old - all over the world, from USA to Australia and all that which falls between. They have been taken home by a complete stranger and provided comfort to their souls. It all started because of random acts of kindness. It is definitely a quilter's dream to pull together treasures from their textiles stash, and make something that will be someone else's treasure. 💜
