Life in the Sloth Lane

Perspective is Everything

Sloths sleep, eat, and even give birth upside down. They are specially equipped to be in that peculiar position – their organs are anchored to their rib cage so it doesn’t hurt to breathe while they’re hanging out. However, thats not the only thing that’s unusual about their perspective. Most mammals have seven neck vertebrae, including giraffes. But three-toed sloths have evolved their top two ribs into extra neck bones, so they can turn their head 270 degrees (and keep smiling), even when they are upside down.

What an example we can glean from these happy creatures. They keep life simple, move slow and deliberate and they smile all the time, naturally. As we look at being quarantined within in our homes, restricted from being in restaurants and social gatherings, it could be easy for us to be unhappy, angry and negative most of the time. We could become frustrated with not having control over our lives, unlike the sloth who travels from tree to tree enjoying two things – the plush green leaves of the trees and the sunshine. What two things are you enjoying in your current circumstances?
